A Military Man of Honor
A Woman in Desperate Circumstances
A Dangerous Deception...

1843

Only the bravest of souls live on the streets of Cairo. And the most desperate...

Raised an orphan in the mission, branded a bastard, and lusted after, Averill had no choice. She couldn't stay. It wasn't safe. And she didn't belong. She doesn't belong anywhere. Nothing hides her vivid blue eyes and artistic talent. But she's safe on the streets, as long as no one looks too close. A foreign soldier with an eye for detail could destroy her world.

The only thing worse is going back.

Captain Andrew Tennison has a secret mission, a bent for intrigue, and a taste for danger. What he doesn't have is any desire to assume his position in England as heir to an earldom. Undercover work in Her Majesty's service is exactly what he likes. The last thing he needs is to become entangled with a woman of unusual beauty whose existence is in peril. But someone has to step in.

...and alter fate.

Averill Historical Romance The Brocade Collection Book 3 edition by Jackie Ivie Romance eBooks

This book started out in what I thought was an exciting way--Averill, a half-Egyptian orphan, is an artist dressed as a boy. The hero, the British soldier Tennison, finds her and takes her off the streets. She will be his artist on their journey. I was waiting for some very exciting plot lines--however the journey through the desert almost made me stop reading. I also had a hard time with how the author made Tennison out to be so cruel in his treatment of her--all because he supposedly was trying to save her from himself. Those scenes just didn't do anything for me. Of course when he finally succumbs to his feelings, and they do get together, she becomes pregnant. Then the terrible fire pushes them apart, and she has to be all alone for the birth of the baby. But amazingly, Averill's artistic talent, which brought them together in the first place, brings them together again, and they all live happily ever after...

I can't justify recommending this book because of all the chapters that went on and on and on and on and on, and well, you get the point.

Averill Historical Romance The Brocade Collection Book 3 edition by Jackie Ivie Romance eBooks Reviews

I laughed and cried with the characters in this book. I love the idea of the Knight and the castle. Love never runs smooth, but this couple seem to have their fair share of victory and defeats. You'll love the outcome of this book!
Well written, you could almost smell the desert from the descriptions. Two people who are falling in love should be able to talk and understand each other better,if Andrew had talked less about being a gentleman and more about needing Averill in his life they might have had less problems.
I fell in love with Averill, the young woman who had to pretend to be a boy to survive, from the very beginning. Lots of hope and frustration in the story of one woman's determination to rise above the streets of Cairo, but it is presented in a way that makes you not care that it's one in the morning, and you need to be up at six. The hero in the story has his own secrets, too. Read and find out how pride can get in the way, but diligence and love...well, read and enjoy.
I like the way this author writes and have read nearly all of her books. This one is not a favourite. I loved that the setting was so different and the story was unique. The h was an Egyptian orphan artist that the H finds on the streets, practically starving and disguised as a boy. He takes her off on a journey across the desert and she is supposed to be an artist. He also wants her to playact as his mistress. She is a very beautiful woman and it is obvious that she is half-Egyptian and half-European, as her colouring is fair and she has blue eyes. She has been told that she is the illegitimate child of a prostitute by a priest in the orphanage where she was brought up. She escaped the orphanage after the priest tried to molest her.

This is a long saga in several parts with lots of different settings. As one of the other reviewers said, the desert part of the story was very tedious and I didn't think it would ever be over. The H was on a mission for the British government and dragged the h through all of his escapades. He tries to fight his attraction for her the whole time as he doesn't want to dishonour her. I suppose the author was trying to build the relationship between the main characters so that when they are separated later, we would understand the H's motivation for being desperate to find her. The author definitely could have cut a large part of that out.

+++Spoilers+++
Once again I'm irritated by the fact that although the h has a huge fear of illegitimacy and goes as far as to tell the H this, she still winds up alone and pregnant. Perhaps because of her origins we are expected to accept this as her due but I really hate this kind of story line. I also truly hate it when the h has the baby before being properly married to the H. The author does a fair job of trying to work it all out but I'm not sure that I loved having the love story at the beginning and then, except for a short reconnection in Venice, the main characters are separated for her entire pregnancy and birth of their child. It all only comes together again in the final 2 chapters.

The author writes well and this is a very long and intricate story, I'm just not sure that I loved it.
I really enjoyed the story. The author did a great job describing the paintings and I could imagine I was standing in front of them seeing them with my own eyes.

I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because there was 2 or 3 places where the plot became slightly confusing and I had to reread to make sure I understood what was going on. Honestly, I cannot pinpoint what it was that confused me, but it did.

Overall the story was lovely though.
I don't usually choose to read historical romance outside of Regency England because creating a aura of authenticity is rare. Jackie Ivie has succeeded where others haves failed. She puts her characters in slums of Cairo and swaying in a camel caravan across the Middle East to Istanbul a d she makes you feel sore and dusty a d exhausted. The personality of her heroine, Averill, is unusual but comprehensible in her life situation. Our hero, Lord Tennison, is the tall, dark, and handsome and faithful man of many dreams.
I love chick in pants historicals and this one did not disappoint. It's the story of a girl, left at an orphanage as an infant and forced to grow up on the streets of Cairo disguised as a boy for her own survival. She endures hardships no human should and it is these trials that mold her into a strong young woman that is determined she will not break in the face of her adversities. The hero is, quite simply, divine. This is a beautiful love story that I will definitely read more than once.
